Testosterone
to Liven Up Libido

Though often thought of as the male hormone, testosterone plays an important role in a woman's body.

A woman's testosterone level decreases throughout her adult life until, by menopause, her testosterone level is about 50% that of a 20-year-old. In fact, it is estimated that between 11 and 16 million women in the United States are currently deficient in testosterone. Lower testosterone levels are related to depression, osteoporosis, an increase in total body fat mass - and perhaps most noticeably for those concerned, declining libido.

The good news is studies show us that low-dose testosterone therapy for women may soon be as common as estrogen therapy. This is particularly encouraging for post-menopausal women concerned with reviving their sex drive!

In one study, (reported September 2000, New England Journal of Medicine) testosterone patches were tested on 75 surgically menopausal women whose declining testosterone levels had resulted in a loss of libido. Study participants using testosterone patches were two to three times more likely to have an increase in sexual activity and improved overall well being than those not using patches. Other studies have shown similar results.
